Some Seasonal Considerations

It’s late autumn. Crops have been gathered & the land is ready for a long rest. Historically, it is a time to take stock, stock up & prepare; not only for the cold of winter, but for what we hope to achieve in the long run.

In the two months past the September equinox, the days have shortened & the temperature has dropped. Our solar driven energies are winding down.

Shorter days may make us feel as if our productive hours have been cut short, but it is important to make certain that we maintain a balance of mental & physical activity appropriate to the season. So, while the weather may not be conducive to outdoor activity, we can use this opportunity to go inward.

Autumn is a season based upon the air element. A season when our thoughts need to be gathered & our recent experiences digested. It is an excellent time to develop mental clarity, to shift the balance from activity to receptivity; a great time to start a yoga & meditation practice.

Yoga is a great way to stay physically active while at the same time gathering our energies to our center. A consistent yoga practice helps us counteract the physical & emotional sense of restriction that can occur at this time of the year. Yoga allows us to move from restriction to expansion, from stillness to action, from past (summer) to future (spring) while staying present (autumn & winter).

Yoga is great for winter months

It’s a great way to maintain a sunny attitude.

Autumn is also a wonderful time to start a meditation practice. Meditation is a sure way to integrate the benefits of yoga deep into our being by stabilizing us as the winds of change can knock us off balance. It helps us move smoothly through all the changes that the change of seasons bring, including the holiday frenzy.

I urge you to take time to resist the pull of impending holiday madness which can scatter & deplete your energies & gather them toward your center through the practices of yoga & meditation.

They will help you to appreciate & experience the stillness of winter, encouraging the fertile ground of your restful, yet fully aware mind to nourish the seeds of intention & desire that will flourish come spring.
