Have you noticed the ingredients list on food packages that are NOT in the food. Lately it seems as though the non-existent ingredients that are listed on food labels is getting longer than the actual ingredients that make up some food products. The non-list seems to be getting a lot more attention these days with such non-ingredients as Non-GMO, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, No Artificial Sugars, No Artificial Colors, No Preservatives, Zero Trans-Fats, rGBH Free, Hormone Free, No Anti-Biotics, and depending on what you’re actually buying the list can go on and on…so what’s all the hype about anyway?
It seems there are two parts to the reason for this growing “non-ingredients” list that is taking over food packaging labels. First, there are those brand name companies like Kellog’s, Krafts, Nestle, Coca Cola and so on that are capitalizing on the organic food movement. That’s a good thing, but also a bad thing. As soon as fortune 500 companies begin to jump on the band wagon of a real, grass-roots movement, then you know authenticity is about to leave the building. Cheating and lying start to take over as a convenient way to pinch prices in order to satisfy the bottom line – share holders’ profits. Non-GMO? Who’ll know the difference?
On the other hand, listing non-ingredients on food labels is a positive trend for the preventive and environmental health movement, because at the very least it gives the uneducated consumer (or the one that would just as happily buy whatever is on the grocery store shelves) something to think about as they reach out for that “alternative” bag of Cheese Puffs. It’s especially a good motivation for someone that has already been thinking about consuming healthier food to double check their buying choice, and hopefully support cleaner, more non-toxic food.
The awareness brought on by the ever expanding “non-ingredients” list can be comforting to some and offensive or annoying to others. Those that are the die-hard health conscious type like to know what is NOT in their food – without any surprises. A non-ingredients list placed on the front of a food package is more convenient than having to flip the product around to read the fine print. Yet, their are other people that have completely dismissed the entire health trend as nothing more than another marketing scam taking advantage of people’s gullibility. They would say that the “health nuts” are truly fools to buy food that is identical to the conventional variety, yet with a higher price tag.
Yes, their is definitely a price difference with good reason (our tax dollars subsidize aggressively farmed foods), and yes, today there are now thousands of so-called “healthy” food products in our grocery store aisles that are anything but healthy, and are actually loaded with all kinds of junk masquerading as a “natural” ingredient.
Whatever you choose to consume, be sure to begin taking the steps to learn about real toxicity, why you should stay away from certain items, and how to gauge what is just hype and nothing more. Check out this list of some of the ingredients you may want to avoid: Chemical Cuisine
